Efficient use of energy

Energy use (and costs) is becoming increasingly important to building owners, occupants, and code officials, and they are demanding more and more efficiency from the products they purchase and endorse.

The ever-growing "sustainable living" movement reinforces this fact. VELUX has been ahead of the curve, and intends to stay ahead. Over 90% of our production has been ENERGY STAR certified in all United States climate zones (see chart below), allowing you to specify our products with confidence. As well, we would like to hear your specific suggestions on how we could make our services even better for your clients.

In order to reduce CO2 emissions and optimize energy efficiency, the building must be viewed as a whole, and not just as the sum of its parts.

As part of the design of a building, energy efficiency must be incorporated and natural resources, such as the sun and wind, should be utilized as much as possible.

Windows, for example, should be considered as energy contributors; they should be strategically located to maximize solar heat gain and natural ventilation, and different types of windows should be selected for installations facing north or south.

Adding roller shutters and awning blinds can enhance the combined effect of these two factors by providing a flexible building envelope that keeps heat in on cold winter nights and out in the summer.

Houses of the future will be designed to automatically control the indoor climate, knowing when to insulate from cold, when to protect from heat, and when to ventilate.

Energy Codes

As energy costs continue to rise, architects and builders are being forced to design and build energy-efficient buildings, both residentially and commercially... while keeping costs as low as possible.

It is a challenge for the construction industry to understand and comply with energy efficiency guidelines that have been written into the latest International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) and other state and local energy codes. When lower quality fenestration products are selected, these codes may limit the amount of windows and skylights that can be installed in a building.

A construction permit must meet strict minimum values for the overall energy performance of the building "envelope," or the U-factors of its components. When designing bright, airy buildings, ENERGY STAR qualified products are one of the traditional ways to meet energy efficiency requirements.

The majority of VELUX products are ENERGY STAR qualified in all 50 states, which indicates that they satisfy the criteria set forth by the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). In order to qualify as an ENERGY STAR fenestration product, it must be tested for heat loss, heat gain, and light transmission, then certified by the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC).

Architects and builders can use more windows and skylights, create more light inside, and create more attractive buildings and more livable spaces by specifying or using ENERGY STAR products.

By combining emerging control technologies with more effective daylighting products, such as VELUX skylights and VELUX SUN TUNNEL skylights, there is a significant potential for lighting energy savings in warm climates. VELUX products may be governed by energy codes and regulations.

ENERGY STAR covers residential products. Products that are not Energy Star compliant in any climate zones are roof windows and ThermoLite skylights.

Compliance:

All climate zones: FS, VS, VSE, FCM, QPF, EF (E-Class Fixed), EV (E-Class Venting), TGF and TMF Sun Tunnels with energy kits, TLR Sun Tunnel with energy kit, (TGR, THR, TMR Sun tunnels with energy kits)

North-Central, South-Central, Southern climate zones: VCM, VCE, VCS, GSM (Skymax)

What is an
ENERGY STAR® label?

The Department of Energy (DOE) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) developed the ENERGY STAR label to identify products that meet certain energy performance standards. Through the ENERGY STAR label, consumers are able to assure their product's performance for their region of the country quickly and easily. U.S. climate zones affect the energy performance of windows, doors, TDDs and skylights. VELUX standard skylights meet the ENERGY STAR requirements for all climate zones in the United States. They are rated differently from windows and doors.

What’s required for a manufacturer to have a product ENERGY STAR® labeled?

  • Product must be NFRC certified and labeled
  • Product meets ENERGY STAR® requirements for the labeled climate zone(s)
Brighten up your day each morning, save on energy each day.
